The Declaration of Independence

Happiness?
What is happiness?
What is this happiness you pursue?

Happiness was being wrapped up in his arms.
Happiness was holding his hand and never wanting to let go.
Happiness was putting your ear to his chest to listen to his heart beat.
Happiness was a kiss so wonderful, even words couldn’t convey its greatness.
Happiness was any moment spent with him.
Happiness was ignorance.
Happiness was impulse.
Happiness was a bunch of lies that you completely fell for.

Happiness was having an aunt who loved your unconditionally and who you could be completely honest with.
Happiness was using that aunt's house as your sancturary a weekend out of every month.
Happiness was believing that she could beat the cancer.
Happiness was driving so fast you thought your engine would explode any minute.
Happiness was a deep inhale of a toxic cigarette.
Happiness was lots of nights your don’t remember and don’t want to remember.
Happiness was a razor blade in your hand and bleeding cuts on your wrist.

Happiness is laughter.
Happiness is knowledge.
Happiness is acceptance.
Happiness is realizing that you’re gonna be okay after all.
Happiness is finally loving yourself (or at least trying).
Happiness is being able to get through a broken heart (or at least trying).
Happiness is feeling beautiful.
Happiness is finding God.
Happiness is finally hearing your parents say "I'm proud of you" (even just once).
Happiness is an impromptu road trip.
Happiness is sand between your toes.
Happiness is being on the Dean's List.
Happiness is buying a fishie to be your new boyfriend.
Happiness is naming that fishie “Winchester Hooligan Bond”.
Happiness is watching a sunset.
Happiness is blowing bubbles and playing skip-it.
Happiness is waking up to wet puppy dog kisses on your face.
Happiness is a new designer handbag that you really can't afford.
Happiness is going to the park to play on the swings.
Happiness is laughing so hard, soda comes out of your nose.
Happiness is sliding fuzzy soft slippers on your sore feet at the end of a long day.
Happiness is waking up to the sound of birds singing outside your window in the morning.
Happiness is being greeted at the door by the smell of home cookin'.
Happiness is a hot cup of tea on a snowy day.
Happiness is accepting that your aunt is gone (or at least trying).
Happiness is knowing that you'll see her again one day.
Happiness is finally looking forward to the life God has for you.

Happiness will be being called "Dr."
Happiness will be looking into the eyes of the one you love and saying “I do”.
Happiness will be giving birth.
Happiness will be being called “mommy”.
Happiness will be a surprise back rub when you need it most.
Happiness will be being reunited with your aunt and everyone you love in Heaven.
Happiness will be having "I love you" whispered in your ear (and actually believing it this time).
